In order to break the cycle of poverty, DARA Europe is involved on a long-term basis in helping families in Andong, Cambodia. In this way, children are given every opportunity for a good future, even after a difficult start in life.
In Andong, near the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, many families live in abject poverty. Most houses lack a solid roof and a hygienic toilet. “Children live there in unhealthy conditions, and also in the surrounding area there are hardly any safe places to play,” says Tirza Voss, initiator of the Dutch foundation DARA Europe, which works to ensure a good future for children in Andong. “In one of the families we have been helping for a long time, the children also found themselves almost alone at home. The mother died, and the father became seriously ill.”
Tirza kent het gezin sinds 2009, toen ze het initiatief nam voor de oprichting van het kindercentrum van Stellar Child Care Organization (SCCO) in Andong. De vier kinderen zijn er in 2012 opgevangen. Zodra de gezondheid van de vader het toeliet, zijn de kinderen begeleid naar terugkeer in de thuissituatie.
DARA Europe steunt de familie nog altijd. Op allerlei manieren. Zo kreeg het gezin in 2022 een aantal nieuwe meubels, die in Nederland zijn gedoneerd. De maatschappelijk werkster van SCCO ondersteunt de familieleden met praktische zaken die te maken hebben met gezondheid, welzijn, inkomen en opleiding.
De vader en de twee oudste kinderen, die allebei inmiddels twintigers zijn, spelen een belangrijke rol in het leven van Aone. Lavin, de oudste zoon, voelt een grote verantwoordelijkheid voor het gezin. Hij heeft een baan en draagt daarmee financieel bij aan de familie. Dochter Srey Neat is als succesvolle hairstylist een inspirerend rolmodel.
“The family’s perseverance and resilience are so impressive,” says Tirza. “Despite the difficult circumstances in the near past, the children are going through tremendous personal development.” Srey Nich, the youngest daughter, is able to attend a good elementary school and take additional English classes thanks to a financial contribution from SCCO. With a scholarship, Lavit, the youngest son, is studying English at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. He is achieving excellent results, and expects to graduate in two years and find a good job. Tirza: “With education, we actually break the cycle of poverty. It is heartwarming to contribute to that from DARA Europe.”
