DARA Europe through the eyes of a volunteer: a small-scale foundation with a big impact

As treasurer of DARA Europe, Fred van Laarhoven is gratefully part of the team of volunteers focused on creating a promising future for children in Cambodia. His volunteer work for DARA Europe gives Fred a sense of satisfaction, he says in an interview.

Fred felt the need to engage in meaningful activities in addition to relaxation during his retirement. It was thanks to his friends, Hein and José, who had long been involved with DARA Europe, that he was introduced to the wonderful work of the foundation.

“What appeals to me in the activities of DARA Europe and SCCO is the purposefulness and small scale. The pursuit of a promising future for children is the basis for improving society anywhere in the world. “The fact that this goal is being pursued in a relatively small area, namely Andong in Cambodia, inspires me greatly,” he said. “Therefore, results are tangible and achievable,” Fred says.

Thanks to reports and personal conversations with Tirza, the foundation’s initiator and liaison between DARA Europe and SCCO, Fred can attest to the progress of individual children and the community in Andong. His own experience in Cambodia, during a visit with his wife Elly in 2019, was a highlight. “I got to know SCCO’s team, the children attending the educational programs and the families receiving intensive counseling from SCCO. Each one was enthusiastic and determined to contribute to a better future for themselves and their community.

Constant attention and effort is needed to enable as many children as possible to shine. This requires support from DARA Europe and others. As treasurer of DARA Europe, Fred is responsible for managing the organization’s cash flows, including collecting donations and making payments to the partner organization SCCO in Cambodia. In addition, as a member of the board, Fred plays a role in policy setting, decision making and organizing events and fundraising.

“Although not everything always goes as planned, the results and the tremendous commitment of the children, families, the local team in Cambodia, as well as the team of DARA Europe, provide renewed energy and inspiration,” says Fred.

Fred heartily recommends DARA Europe if you are looking for a concrete, small-scale way to contribute. “The lines of communication are short and progress is tangibly present,” Fred said.
