Sokun has been a dedicated social worker at SCCO, the partner organization of DARA Europe, for many years. She began her career at the former children’s center in the city, where she played a crucial role in reintegrating children into their (foster) families or preparing them for independent living.
With her dedication, patience, and perseverance, she has made a difference in the lives of many. Today, she continues to support these (now) young adults and plays an important role within the team in Andong. In an interview, Sokun shares her experiences, challenges, and the impact of her work.
More than just social work
Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. Sokun mentors ten students within the reintegration program, and her work goes far beyond just social support. She visits them (bi)weekly, maintains daily contact, and assists them in various areas, including education, health, housing, and finances.
“I coach, guide, and observe their behavior and needs where necessary. The main goal is to ensure they receive what they truly need to become independent and successful,” Sokun explains.
In addition to her part-time role in the reintegration program, she recently started working full-time at SCCO and took on a new role as a social worker in Andong.
“That’s right,” says Sokun. “My focus is on organizing parent meetings where we discuss topics such as positive parenting and the importance of education.” She also trains young people on subjects like self-care, independence, and maintaining healthy boundaries. Additionally, she helps them choose vocational training programs and closely monitors their progress.
“Together with my colleagues Poutheary and Mai, I work within the community. We each have our own expertise and responsibilities, but we share one goal: strengthening the community and building a better future,” Sokun says proudly.

Growing towards independence
Sokun witnesses daily how young people develop and take responsibility for their own lives.
“In the past year, every student in the program has achieved personal successes. Take Sokchea, for example: she has undergone a tremendous transformation. Her behavior has improved, she communicates more respectfully, and she is determined to complete her studies. She is now taking charge of her own future and working hard to achieve her goals.”
Since starting in 2016, Sokun has seen many young adolescents grow . Thanks to her guidance, they develop essential skills that help them stand stronger in life.
A lasting impact
Can you name a moment when you truly saw the impact of your work? Sokun smiles and points to Sothea, sitting next to her.
“I have been mentoring Sothea since 2016. He has a medical condition and receives support for his health. In the beginning, he struggled to keep up with his physiotherapy exercises. But by continuing to guide and encourage him, I saw him slowly change. It took time, but I didn’t give up. Now, he takes responsibility for his own progress. That makes me proud—of SCCO, of myself, and most of all, of him,” Sokun shares.

Stronger together
Sokun doesn’t work alone. Within the SCCO team in Andong, everyone brings their own knowledge and experience. By working together, they find better solutions for children and families.
“The most important thing within our team is listening to each other. What do we need? How can we support one another? We share one mission and vision. By exchanging information and motivating each other, we find the best ways to help the community,” Sokun explains.
A future of hope
Sokun’s work shows that patience, dedication, and collaboration can have a lasting impact. Through her commitment, she helps children, young people, and families build a better future. And perhaps even more importantly, she inspires others to work together toward lasting change.
DARA Europe supports SCCO and enables the structural support of children and their families in Andong. Together, we are building a hopeful future.
