Sokun has been a dedicated social worker at SCCO, DARA Europe’s partner organization, for many years. She began her career at the city’s former children’s center, where she played a crucial role in reintegrating children within their (foster) families or into independent lives.
With her commitment, patience and perseverance, she has made a difference for many. Today, she not only dedicates herself to these (now) young people, but is also an indispensable force within the team in Andong. In an interview, Sokun shares her experiences, challenges and the impact of her work.
More than social work
Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. Sokun supervises 10 students within the reintegration program, and her work goes far beyond social support. She visits them weekly, maintains daily contact and helps them in many areas: education, health, housing and finances. “I coach, guide and observe their behavior and needs as needed,” she says. “The main goal is to make sure they get what they really need to become independent and successful,” says Sokun.
In addition to her part-time role in the reintegration program, she recently joined SCCO full-time and also started working as a social worker in Andong.
“True,” says Sokun, “My focus is on organizing parent meetings, where we discuss topics such as positive parenting and the importance of education.” She also trains young people on topics such as self-care, independence and preventing transgressive behavior. She helps them choose vocational courses and closely monitors their progress. “Together with my colleagues Poutheary and Mai, I work in the community,” she says. “We all have our own expertise and responsibilities, but share one goal: to strengthen the community and build a better future,” Sokun says proudly.
Growing toward independence
Sokun sees daily how young people are developing and taking responsibility for their own lives. “In the past year, every young person in the program has had his or her own successes. Take Sokchea: she has gone through a huge transformation. Her behavior has improved, she communicates more respectfully and she is determined to complete her studies. She now takes charge of her own future and works hard to achieve her goals.” Since her start in 2016, Sokun has seen dozens of young people grow. Thanks to her guidance, they develop essential skills that help them be stronger in life.
Impact that stays
Can you name a moment when you really saw how much impact your work has? Sokun smiles and points to Sothea, who is sitting next to her.
”I have been counseling Sothea since 2016. He has a medical background and receives support for his health. In the beginning, he struggled to maintain his physical therapy exercises. But by continuing to guide and encourage him, I saw him slowly change. It took time, but I didn’t give up. Now he takes responsibility for his own progress.” That makes me proud – of SCCO, of myself and especially of him,” shares Sokun

Stronger together
Sokun does not work alone. In the team at SCCO, working in Andong, each brings their own knowledge and experience. By working together, they find better solutions for children and families.
“The most important thing in our team is listening to each other. What do we need? How can we support each other? We have one mission and vision. “By sharing information and motivating each other, together we find the best way to help the community,” Sokun explains.

Sokun’s work shows that patience, commitment and collaboration can have a lasting impact. With her dedication, she helps children, youth and families build a better future. And perhaps more importantly, she inspires others to work together for lasting change.
