Empowering youth, transforming communities

Every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their talents, unlock their potential, and build a brighter future. In Andong, Cambodia, access to education and stable employment is far from guaranteed. But thanks to the generous support of our dedicated donors, local youth are acquiring essential skills, building confidence, and creating a ripple effect of positive change also in their families and the entire community.

A place where talent flourishes

Since 2017, DARA Europe and Stellar have worked together to run a youth self-help group in Andong. It’s a space where young people gather, learn from one another’s experiences, and grow into inspiring role models within their community.
Sokun, dedicated social worker at Stellar, mentors the group and sees its impact firsthand:

“We support young people as they make the transition from school to practical life. They learn about leadership, health, and children’s rights—empowering them to become true role models in their own community.”

Meeting around five times a year, the members build practical skills in public speaking, teamwork, and group facilitation. They immediately put what they learn into practice by organizing and leading activities for children and peers through Stellar. That real-world application is where the true power of the group lies.

“Young people develop their own strengths while actively giving back to others,” Sokun adds. “It builds self-belief, fosters lasting friendships, and strengthens the entire community.”

Dreams become reality

What does being part of this group mean to the youth themselves? We spoke with two active members: Michael and Leakhena.

Michael: “I want to give back to my community”

In early 2026, Michael received a Stellar scholarship to pursue vocational training (TVET) as an electrician, and he joined the self-help group shortly after. Living near Andong, he spends his free time reading, studying, and playing sports with friends.
For Michael, the group offers far more than just technical knowledge:

“I joined because I wanted to learn new things and get more involved with the children and youth in Andong. Every meeting gives me a boost of confidence. I’m learning to communicate better, picking up new skills, and building valuable friendships with both my peers and our mentors.”

His dream for the future is clear:

“In a few years, I hope to graduate and secure a good job so I can support my family. But I also want to make a real difference for my community and my country. Everything I’m learning here brings me one step closer to making that dream come true.”

Leakhena: “Here, I’m discovering what I’m truly capable of”

Twenty-year-old Somnang Leakhena is a second-year culinary student who dreams of opening her own hospitality business one day. In her spare time, she loves experimenting with new recipes together with her friends.

Through the self-help group, she continues to discover her own strengths:

“Every time we meet, I feel happy. I learn so much from the experiences of others, and I keep growing as a person. It gives me the confidence to keep building my future.”

She also applies the life lessons learned during meetings to her daily routine:

“I’ve learned a lot about environmental protection, health, and hygiene—things I now practice every single day. Small changes really do add up to make a big difference.”

Building a brighter future, together

Michael and Leakhena’s stories show what becomes possible when young people are given the chance to thrive. As they develop their talents and gain confidence, they enthusiastically step up to support their community—shaping not only their own futures, but inspiring those around them to do the same.

This is DARA Europe and Stellar’s mission: working with young people on opportunities that allow them to shape their own future. We support young people with the tools, scholarships, and personalized mentorship they need to carve out their own paths. The skills and experiences they gain create a lasting, positive impact that extends far beyond the individual—reaching families, neighbors, and future generations.
