How a volunteer supports the mission of DARA Europe: José’s story

Since the start of DARA Europe in 2012, José Huizenga has played a crucial role as secretary in the organization’s growth and success. Her involvement goes beyond administrative duties; her commitment stems from a genuine desire to support the families of Andong, Cambodia. With a warm heart and an active approach, José regularly organizes fundraising events, with proceeds directly benefiting the Andong community.

José’s connection with DARA Europe

José’s connection to DARA Europe began through her daughter, Tirza Voss. In 2009, Tirza embarked on a world trip that brought her to Andong, Cambodia, where she witnessed the systemic challenges affecting the community and the limited access to opportunities for its residents. This experience moved her deeply, and upon returning to the Netherlands, she shared her story with family and friends, including her mother, José. José recalls: “From that moment, I knew I wanted to contribute to the community in Andong by organizing events to raise funds.”

A visit to Cambodia

José first visited Cambodia in 2012, the year DARA Europe was founded. Her second trip to Andong came in 2016, when she spent six weeks volunteering at the Stellar Child Care Organisation (SCCO), DARA Europe’s local partner. There, she facilitated playful learning activities for children and collaborated with SCCO teachers to incorporate creative teaching methods, such as games and crafts.

As a remedial teacher specializing in (special-need) primary education, José shared her expertise. “It was incredibly fulfilling to see the children learn and laugh,” she reflects. Additionally, she collaborated with Stellar Foundation, the former sewing center, a space where women could enhance their skills and generate income to support their families.

José’s role as secretary: committed to growth and collaboration

As secretary, José collaborates closely with the board to shape DARA Europe’s vision and actions. Every two weeks, they discuss the organization’s financial situation and the latest developments at SCCO in Cambodia. Beyond secretarial duties, José contributes to the marketing and communication working group and enthusiastically plans fundraising events. For both DARA Europe’s fifth and tenth anniversaries, she organized celebration evenings that raised funds for the Andong community. “Organizing and coordinating are my strengths,” José says with pride.

The mission of DARA Europe

With passion and dedication, José wholeheartedly supports DARA Europe’s mission. Whenever she sees photos and videos of children participating in SCCO’s educational programs, she feels deeply moved and inspired. Through DARA Europe’s efforts, children develop skills and access opportunities that allow them to determine their own futures. “I love to see them grow and shine like stars. That is our mission!” she explains.

DARA Europe’s support helps SCCO to provide basic necessities that enable children to grow up healthy. Beyond this, SCCO emphasizes the holistic development of children, fostering their ability to shape and pursue the futures they envision.
