The importance and impact of reading; a source of hope and self-confidence

As DARA Europe, we believe in the power of reading. Judith works as an educational coach in childcare and as a volunteer team member of DARA Europe. In an interview, she talks about the importance of reading, and how the library and weekend classes are a source of hope and self-confidence for children in the community of Andong, Cambodia.

Reading is an essential skill that lays the foundation for success in school and in life. By reading widely, children develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. “But reading is much more than just developing reading and language skills; it also has a profound impact on children’s social and emotional well-being,” Judith says.

Thanks to the support of DARA Europe, our partner organization in Cambodia, SCCO, gives many children access to books. The library in SCCO is a place where children

can come for relaxation and a chance to unwind, something certainly not unimportant in a neighborhood like Andong, where it is often unsettled and not always safe. From Khmer to English, from true adventures to compelling fiction. For every elementary school child, there is a book to suit their interest and reading level.

Preschool classes also use books from the library. “By starting reading early, we give preschoolers a head start on their school career and encourage their curiosity and love of reading and learning,” Judith says.

On Sunday afternoons, young adults, who are in their graduation year, open the library to the children of the neighborhood. These young people, who lived in the former children’s center, are now supported by us in this way to gain valuable work experience. “They enthusiastically guide the children in reading, drawing and practicing English words together,” says Mr. K., who is a member of the library. It’s a win-win situation, where the children learn and grow, while the young adults contribute to the community and develop skills that will be invaluable for their future,” said Judith

We are proud to have not only established our own library, but also contributed to the establishment of the library at the local elementary school, Kork Rokar. Thanks to the support of the Dutch foundation Biblionef, we have offered English books.

Also contribute to DARA Europe and encourage the enjoyment of reading!
