“Practice out loud and above all don’t worry about mistakes, that’s part of learning.”
Nathanel is 21 and works as an English teacher for Stellar. He has been teaching there since the new Stellar Center opened and this is his very first teaching job. The team at Stellar is an essential part of our programs, which is why we are happy to introduce you to the people behind this work.
Growing in the profession
Nathanel has a class of 22 students and teaches basic English to children between the ages of 7 and 15. In the beginning he found it quite exciting, he says, because he had no experience yet.
But “after all these months,” he says, “I have grown in my self-confidence and become a better teacher.” This is exactly what he also tries to give his students: “Don’t be afraid, practice regularly, be patient and believe in yourself.”
An important message because some students find it difficult to speak or practice out loud for fear of making mistakes. “But making mistakes is part of the learning process,” he stresses.

A safe place to learn and speak
Speaking English in Andong is not a matter of course; there are few places where children can practice it. That is why Nathanel finds it so important that they do so in class: “For me it is important to keep encouraging them. Outside the classroom, opportunities are limited, so speaking aloud together in class is essential.” Creating a safe, inviting atmosphere is crucial in this regard. He combines grammar and vocabulary with conversation and games, giving students structure as well as space to practice naturally.
The lessons are supported by an English workbook with lesson plans and exercises. In addition, they practice conversations and Nathanel regularly introduces interactive game formats so that students can apply what they have learned as well as have fun while learning.
“My lessons usually begin with a warm-up, such as a greeting or a short conversation. Then I introduce the topic of the day and we practice grammar or vocabulary. Then we do different assignments.”
Nathanel grew in his role thanks to time, experience and the support of the team. The other teachers and the education manager helped him with lesson preparation and class management, something that can be challenging at times, but also immensely valuable. After all, he sees how his students progress: “I enjoy watching them improve and become more confident.”
That progress is evident: “When they started in my class, they didn’t know the alphabet. Now they can spell and expand their vocabulary and grammar.” A development of which he is proud: “I am happy to be a (small) part of their future by teaching them.”

Learning, laughing and growing in self-confidence
But it’s not just about learning. The classroom is also a place where children can be with each other and make great memories. He tells with a smile about Radi, a student who could not finish his assignment and said, “My pen is empty so my brain is empty too!”
The entire class burst into laughter. “I cherish such moments,” Nathanel said.
Nathanel is deeply committed to his work and to the children. He hopes to increase their future prospects, “In Cambodia, speaking English is important and often necessary. This skill can make their lives easier and more successful.” This is why he encourages them to keep practicing outside the classroom: ”
“Even if you only practice 5 to 10 minutes a day, watch a video, listen to a song, read a book, or speak English with friends.” These small steps “help them grow and build confidence.” With motivated teachers like Nathanel, each class becomes a safe and supportive place where children can learn, explore and build their confidence.
