Reading joy from an early age

There’s nothing quite like the joy of being read to. In the preschool classes of SCCO in Cambodia, reading aloud plays a key role in the development of young children. It’s more than just a moment of relaxation – it stimulates language skills, imagination, and curiosity. We spoke with Davy, a teacher in SCCO’s preschool, who shared her experiences and vision on the importance of reading aloud for young children.

Language development begins with listening and dreaming
Reading aloud is essential for understanding the language. Davy explains how stories contribute to the language development of young children: “The children get to know the alphabet, and by listening to stories, they also learn how words and narratives fit together.” Additionally, reading aloud helps expand their vocabulary.

Why reading aloud is more than just words
Reading aloud creates a special bond between the reader and the children.
“The children are happy and very focused when I read to them,” Davy says. “They want me to read the story again and again, and they love asking questions. This enthusiasm makes every reading moment special and strengthens the bond between me and the children.”

This interaction not only boosts the children’s engagement but also their curiosity and critical thinking skills. Research shows that interactive reading also promotes language development. By asking children further questions about their ideas and thoughts, they develop reasoning skills and learn to collaborate better. Reading aloud becomes a valuable moment of connection and learning. “Sometimes I choose to sit outside with the children and read there, which not only makes them happy but brings me joy as well,” Davy adds.

If you could choose one book, what’s your favorite to read to the children?
“I can’t choose; I love reading educational and motivational stories,” Davy says. “These stories not only teach children something new but also inspire them to dream and set goals. They help children discover their place in the world.”

What do you wish for the future of these children?
“I hope the children develop their own goals and dreams. Sometimes I ask them what they want to be when they grow up. Often, they tell me they want to become doctors, teachers, IT professionals, designers, or caring parents”

“But what I find most important is that they grow up to be good people who contribute positively to society,”
Davy shares.

Reading aloud as a foundation for growth
Education for 4- and 5-year-olds is not a given in Cambodia. Children usually don’t start public primary school until the age of 6. For children from disadvantaged communities like Andong, this is an even bigger challenge, as their parents often had limited access to education themselves.

SCCO, our Cambodian partner organization, offers this form of education to introduce children to language at an early age. By frequently reading aloud, the children who attend preschool gain an advantage in their future school careers. It stimulates their language development, sparks their imagination, and helps them understand and express emotions. Furthermore, it lays the foundation for a lifetime of reading joy and personal growth.
