Nothing beats the pleasure of being read to. In SCCO’s preschool classrooms in Cambodia, reading aloud plays an important role in young children’s development. It is more than a moment of relaxation – it encourages language skills, imagination and curiosity. We spoke with Davy, a preschool teacher at SCCO, who shares her experiences and views on the importance of reading aloud to young children.
Language development begins with listening and dreaming
Reading aloud is essential for learning to understand language. Davy explains how stories contribute to young children’s language development: “Children are introduced to the alphabet, and by listening to stories they also learn how words and stories are put together.” Reading aloud also helps increase vocabulary.
Why reading aloud is more than just words
Reading aloud creates a special bond between the reader and the children.
“The children are happy and very focused when I read aloud,” says Davy. “They want me to read the story more often and they like to ask questions. This enthusiasm makes every read-aloud moment special and strengthens the bond between me and the children.”
This interaction encourages not only children’s engagement, but also their curiosity and critical thinking skills. Research shows that interactive reading aloud also promotes language development. By asking children further about their ideas and thoughts, they also develop their reasoning skills and learn to work better together. Reading aloud thus becomes a valuable moment of connection and learning. “Sometimes I choose to sit outside with the children and read there, which not only the children enjoy, but also gives me pleasure,” Davy adds.
If you can choose one book; which book do you prefer to read to the children?
“I can’t choose, I like to read educational and motivational stories,” says Davy. “These stories not only teach children something new, but also inspire them to dream and set goals. They help children discover their place in the world.”
What do you wish for the future of these children?
”I hope the children develop their own goals and dreams. Sometimes I ask them what they want to be later. Often they tell me they want to be a doctor, a teacher, an ICT person, a designer, a caring parent”
”But what I think is most important is that they grow up to be good people who contribute positively to society” shares Davy
Reading aloud as a foundation for growth
Education for 4 and 5 year olds is not a given in Cambodia. Children do not normally start public elementary school until the age of 6. For children from disadvantaged communities, such as Andong, this is an extra big challenge because parents themselves often had limited access to education.
SCCO, our Cambodian partner organization, offers this form of education precisely to introduce children to the language at an early age. Frequent reading aloud gives preschoolers a head start on their further school career. It stimulates their language development, stimulates their imagination and helps them understand and express emotions. In addition, it lays the foundation for a lifetime of reading enjoyment and personal growth.
