It is a valuable addition to Cambodia’s regular primary education system, where English is often limited. Many parents who can afford it therefore choose private schools to offer their children additional learning opportunities. Increasingly, people see English as a key to a better education and a hopeful future.

DARA Europe is committed to making those same opportunities available to all children – regardless of their background. That is why we support SCCO, our local partner organization, in offering English classes in Andong.
We spoke with Kuntheak, a committed and enthusiastic English teacher at SCCO, about her daily lessons, the challenges and the satisfaction of her work.

A class full of energy, interaction and structure
“A typical class day always begins with a warm greeting,” Kuntheak says. “I start with a brief review of what we learned earlier. Then I introduce the new topic in a playful and easy way, such as with pictures, songs or games. This keeps the lesson fun and educational.”

During the lesson, there is plenty of room for interaction. Kuntheak asks questions, has the children work together in groups and makes sure everyone stays actively involved. “At the end of class, we repeat what we’ve learned, and sometimes I give a small homework assignment,” Kuntheak said. “Most importantly, the classroom feels like a safe, friendly place to learn.” shares Kuntheak.

Learning and building self-confidence
What touches her most is the growth she sees in her students. ”Not only in their language skills, but also in their behavior and self-confidence. When I see how they progress, I remind myself why I do this work. It’s really rewarding work,” Kuntheak says.

”When I see how they progress, I remind myself why I do this work. It’s really rewarding work.”

Yet there are also challenges. Many children in Andong come from families with financial concerns. Sometimes there is little room or attention at home for homework or language development. “That makes it difficult to keep the children on task,” she explains. “But that’s precisely why I try to create an environment in the classroom that is motivating. Where children feel seen, and where making mistakes is allowed.”

For students struggling to learn English, Kuntheak works with patience and enthusiasm. “I use simple steps and celebrate each small victory. I remind them that making mistakes is part of the game. My goal is to strengthen their motivation and self-confidence.”

Sometimes this also produces funny moments. “One time I asked about the date, and a student confidently said ‘fifty’ instead of ‘fifteen.’ We all had to laugh about it. It turned into a fun learning moment!”

From English language lessons to future opportunities

If she could give her students one message, it would be this: “Never give up, even when it feels hard.
