Education is at the heart of all projects supported by DARA Europe. Successful participation in school naturally also requires attention to the families in which children grow up. Social worker Sokun talks about her commitment to a good future for children in Cambodia. <\/strong><\/p> \n \n

Since 2020, Sokun has been a social worker with Stellar Child Care Organization (SCCO), the local NGO implementing programs and projects to help people in Andong with support from DARA Europe. Together with the teachers and other professionals in the local team, Sokun deals with the children’s participation in education, and she explicitly looks at the family situation. <\/p> \n \n

“I regularly visit the families and schools to make sure everything is going well,” says Sokun, who is the first point of contact for the children and families receiving long-term support from DARA Europe<\/a>. “Everything is about giving the children the help they need to participate in society and work toward a good future.” <\/p> \n \n

Sokun is a coach for families, and she liaises with families and teachers to facilitate appropriate educational and support offerings.<\/p> \n \n

It is important that children feel safe to talk about their feelings, lives and issues in a confidential setting, Sokun believes. “So we talk a lot about this. In addition, we activate parents to support their children to go to school.” Sokun also takes a very practical approach. She helps with school registration, she gives study and career advice, and she arranges financial matters such as opening a bank account.<\/p> \n \n

“I am committed to helping the families of the children from the former children’s center <\/a>become truly independent, confident that they can shape their own future,” Sokun says of her ambitions for the future. “I am convinced that school and work lay the foundation for that. I hope that from my position I can contribute to the self-reliance of the families, I already see it happening: step by step they learn more and more and are able to take responsibility for their own lives.” <\/p> \n \n
